What?

The survey will collect comparable data in 15 EU Member States – Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden – from immigrants and descendants of immigrants. The survey asks about their experiences in different areas of life – ranging from employment to crime victimisation – through the lens of fundamental rights.

Data will be collected about people originating from Turkey, Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and Syria. The survey will cover people aged 16 years or older who have lived in the selected country for at least 12 months before the survey.

Why?

The survey data helps Member States and EU institutions to protect the fundamental rights of people who have an immigrant and ethnic minority background.

In the absence of comparable data on the above groups at the level of the EU and individual Member States, the survey provides unique, timely and relevant EU-wide comparable data on the impact of anti-discrimination, anti-racism and equality legislation policies.

The findings will also help policy makers to develop targeted legal and policy responses in the areas of social rights, integration, social inclusion, civic participation and trust in public authorities.

The survey findings will support further development of fundamental rights indicators in the area of immigrant integration.

How?

Data will be collected through face-to-face interviews and an online questionnaire.

The survey builds on the methodology and procedures developed for EU-MIDIS II and on stakeholder consultations carried out in 2019.

The design of the survey enables the analysis of trends over time for certain results.

The survey includes questions on:

  • experiences of perceived discrimination in employment, education, housing and healthcare services.
  • experiences of police stops and criminal victimisation, including hate crime.
  • awareness of rights and redress mechanisms.
  • societal participation and integration.

Data collection takes into account the specific experiences of women, different age groups, and people with disabilities.

Findings

The survey data will be collected in 2021 and the first survey findings will be available in 2022.
