    Dimitris Avramopoulos is European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship. Before that he held various ministerial posts in the Greek government. The Commission welcomes the idea of a strategic dialogue within the Forum, a real exchange of ideas and good practices between different actors around three main subjects of interest at the present time: inclusion, refugee protection and the digital age. It also views FRA as one of its most important partners in its endeavour to build up a Union where people living in Europe are at the core of EU policies.

    former Human Rights Ambassador, Norway

    Petter F. Wille is Director of Norway’s national human rights institution. Most of his career has been spent in the Norwegian Foreign Service as, for example, the Ambassador/Special Envoy for Human Rights, Norway’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, and Deputy Director General in the Department for the United Nations. He has also been a deputy judge in a Norwegian town court. In addition, he has written books and articles on human rights and teaches human rights and international law at the University of Oslo. He views the forum as a unique possibility to meet colleagues and human rights experts, and to participate in discussions on highly topical issues.

    Member of the European Parliament

    Laura Ferrara is a lawyer, human rights activist as well as an activist of the Movimento 5 Stelle, an Italian political movement that promotes the direct participation of citizens in the management of public affairs. She is a Member of the European Parliament and rapporteur on the reports on the situation of fundamental rights in Europe, on the fight against crime and corruption, and on public access to documents. In order to strengthen the instruments to prevent violations of fundamental rights, she proposed introducing a permanent EU mechanism to prevent and resolve such violations within Member States.

  • FRA and the Council of Europe met on 10 November to discuss updating the Handbook on European law relating to the rights of the child. The handbook covers relevant Council of Europe and European Union legal standards, as well as case law from the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights.

    FRA contributed to discussions on EU data protection law, migrants’ health data and fundamental rights considerations during a workshop focusing on data protection and legal issues.
  • On 15 October, the European Parliament will hold a public hearing on a European Citizens Initiative to promote minorities, and linguistic and cultural diversity. The organisers will present their initiative.

  • FRA and the European Court of Human Rights will launch the 2020 edition of the FRA and Council of Europe handbook on European law relating to asylum, borders and immigration. This online book launch will take place on 17 December. It is being organised in collaboration with the International Association of Refugee and Migration Judges and the European Asylum Support Office (EASO).
  • In the latest edition of his video blog, FRA Director Michael O'Flaherty focuses on press freedom and the importance of an independent media for the society.
  • Representatives from intergovernmental organisations and EU institutions responsible for cooperation with civil society and for supporting human rights defenders in Europe will meet online for an internal exchange on 17 April .

    The Compendium of practices is the key output of the Working party on improving reporting and recording of hate crime in the EU. It collates practices for combating hate crime from across the EU, with a step-by-step description of the practice broken down by country and category. The aim of the compendium is to help policymakers and practitioners such as law enforcement officers understand what is being done elsewhere in the EU to combat hate crime, and which elements could be adapted for use in their own national contexts.

    Belgian author

    Stefan Hertmans is a Flemish Belgian writer, author of a vast literary and essayist oeuvre, which has won numerous prizes. His last novel, War and Turpentine, is an internationally-acclaimed bestseller. His essays are mostly concerned with the place of arts in today’s democratic society. Previously he was professor of art criticism, agogics and text analysis at University College Ghent. He has engaged intensely in the debates following the terrorist attacks in Brussels on 22 March and has recently written a short play ‘Antigone in Molenbeek’ which will be performed at the Amsterdam Forum Re:creating Europe in June 2016. His concern for the arts as the most outstanding form to convey human rights in times of political and cultural crisis, and his strong personal engagement, triggered his invitation to the Fundamental Rights Forum in Vienna.

  • On 11 June, FRA contributed to a Red Cross Europe webinar on assisting migrants at borders.
  • Event
    FRA will take part in a online expert consultation on 20 April on countering hate speech. The KAICIID Dialogue Centre, in cooperation with the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the European Council of Religious Leaders/ Religions for Peace- Europe are organising the event.
  • FRA will exchange views with the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee on establishing an EU Mechanism on democracy, the Rule of Law and fundamental rights.
  • On 18 June, FRA will host a coordination meeting of working groups under the EU’s High Level Group on combatting racism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance.
  • FRA spoke during a panel on civil society and philanthropy for the next decade on 19 October, highlighting challenges to civil society space in Europe.
